JEA Northside Full-Scope High Fidelity Simulator Delivered

In September 2020, WSC delivered a full-scope high fidelity simulator to JEA for the Northside Generating Station Unit 1 plant. This plant uses a Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler that can produce up to 310 MW of electricity from a GE D-6 Steam Turbine. In a CFB boiler, air jets are used to keep solid fuel and other bed material in a suspension where combustion occurs. Finer particles are separated from the flue gas by passing through cyclones, ultimately allowing them to be recirculated in the furnace. The unit is controlled by a Virtual ABB Symphony+ control system with additional Emulated Hard Panels and Exciter controls. The simulator also included WSC's Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS), allowing students to work through lessons geared around difficult plant transients without the instructor present.
